Air Purifier for Open-Plan Kitchens

Open-plan kitchens are popular in Malaysian condos and new homes, but cooking odour from sambal, frying and wok hei travels straight to the sofa. Here is how an air purifier with activated carbon helps.

Air Purifier for Open-Plan Kitchens

Open-plan living is now the default layout in Malaysian condos and many new landed homes. The kitchen, dining and living areas flow into one space without walls. It looks great in the developer's showroom, but the moment you fry ikan bilis or cook sambal belacan, the entire floor smells like a hawker stall. An air purifier with the right filter combination can reduce cooking odour and airborne grease particles — if you choose the right model and place it correctly.

Why open-plan kitchens are an air quality challenge

In a traditional walled kitchen, cooking fumes are contained. The exhaust hood captures most of the smoke and grease, and the kitchen door keeps the rest from reaching the living room. In an open-plan layout, there is no barrier. Cooking fumes travel freely across the entire space.

Malaysian cooking makes this worse than it sounds. Wok cooking at high heat produces fine oil droplets (0.5-5 microns) and volatile organic compounds (the gaseous molecules that carry the smell). Deep-frying generates a persistent grease particulate that settles on soft furnishings. Sambal, shrimp paste and curry pastes release pungent sulphur and amine compounds that linger for hours.

A range hood helps — but even the most powerful range hood captures only 50-70% of cooking fumes when used correctly. The rest disperses into the open-plan space.

What an air purifier can and cannot do for cooking odour

An air purifier addresses cooking fumes in two ways.

HEPA filter for particles. The H13 HEPA filter captures fine oil droplets, smoke particles and grease particulates. These are the visible haze that forms above the stove and drifts across the room. A properly sized purifier can clear these particles from a room within 20-30 minutes after cooking.

Activated carbon for gases and odours. The gaseous compounds that carry cooking smells are not captured by HEPA — they pass through the fibre media as gas. An activated carbon or deodorising filter adsorbs these gas molecules onto its porous surface. The more carbon the filter contains, the more odour it can neutralise before it needs replacement.

An air purifier will not eliminate cooking odour instantly. It reduces the concentration and duration. Instead of smelling sambal for 4 hours, you might smell it for 30-45 minutes. The difference is noticeable and practical, but do not expect the purifier to make your home odourless while the wok is still on the flame.

Which LG PuriCare models handle cooking odour

Every LG PuriCare air purifier includes some form of deodorising filter alongside the H13 HEPA. However, the carbon density and filter design vary across models.

ModelFilter setupCoverageDeodorising layerFrom
360 HITH13 HEPA + 3-stage deodorising61.2 m2Yes (dedicated layer)RM50/mo
AeroBoosterDual H13 HEPA + UVnano52.8 m2Yes (carbon layer)RM65/mo
Alpha Pet SingleV-Pet H13 HEPA61.2 m2Yes (enhanced for organic compounds)RM75/mo
Alpha Pet Double2x V-Pet H13 HEPA104 m2Yes (dual deodorising layers)RM105/mo

The 360 HIT is our most recommended model for open-plan kitchens at the budget level. Its three-stage deodorising filter is specifically designed to handle household odours including cooking fumes, and the 61.2 m2 coverage is sufficient for most Malaysian open-plan ground floors.

For larger open-plan spaces (above 60 m2), the Alpha Pet Double at RM105/month provides 104 m2 coverage with dual deodorising layers. The name says "Pet" but the enhanced carbon filtration works equally well on cooking odour — the organic compound adsorption mechanism is the same.

How to position the purifier in an open-plan kitchen

Place it between the kitchen and the living area. This intercepts cooking fumes before they reach your sofa and soft furnishings. The purifier acts as an air barrier between the cooking zone and the relaxation zone.

Keep it at least 2 metres from the stove. Proximity to high heat and steam can damage the filter and electronics. Grease splatter near the cooking surface is a risk to the intake mesh.

Do not rely on the purifier alone. Use the range hood during cooking. The range hood captures the bulk of the fumes at the source, and the air purifier handles what escapes. Together, they reduce odour duration by 60-80% compared to using neither.

Run the purifier on high during and for 30 minutes after cooking. Most LG PuriCare models will detect the spike in airborne particles and VOCs automatically, ramping up the fan speed. If yours has a manual turbo mode, use it during active cooking for faster fume clearance.

Close the bedroom doors during cooking. This prevents cooking fumes from entering bedrooms. After cooking, open the doors briefly and let the purifier do its work in the main space.

Tips to reduce cooking odour at the source

An air purifier helps, but prevention at the source reduces the load on the filter and extends its lifespan.

Use the range hood on maximum during cooking. Turn it on 2 minutes before cooking and leave it on for 10 minutes after you turn off the flame. Most Malaysian households turn the hood off too early.

Close the kitchen window during frying. This sounds counterintuitive, but an open window behind the stove creates a cross-draught that pulls fumes past the range hood and into the living area. Keep the window closed and let the hood do its job.

Wipe down the stove and splashback immediately after cooking. Grease residue on surfaces re-releases VOCs as it oxidises over the next few hours. A quick wipe with dish soap removes the source.

Ventilate after cooking, not during. Once cooking is done, open windows for 10-15 minutes to flush the air. Then close them and let the purifier maintain clean air for the rest of the day.

Carbon filter lifespan in high-cooking households

Activated carbon filters have a finite adsorption capacity. In a household that cooks Malaysian-style twice daily (morning and evening), the carbon layer will saturate faster than in a household that cooks once a day.

On LG Subscribe plans, filter replacements are included on schedule. If the LG ThinQ app indicates the filter needs replacement before the scheduled date, contact the LG Subscribe team and they will arrange an early replacement at no extra cost. Do not run a saturated carbon filter — once the carbon is full, it stops adsorbing odour and the purifier only captures particles.

The realistic expectation

An air purifier in an open-plan kitchen will not make your home smell like an air-conditioned shopping mall during cooking. What it will do is reduce the intensity and duration of cooking odour significantly, prevent grease particles from settling on your sofa and curtains, and bring air quality back to clean levels within 30-45 minutes after cooking.

Combined with a good range hood and basic kitchen hygiene, this is enough for most families to enjoy open-plan living without the air quality compromise.
