Where to Place Your Air Purifier

Where you place your air purifier affects how well it cleans the air. This room-by-room guide covers the correct distance from walls, height, and common mistakes that reduce purification efficiency.

Where to Place Your Air Purifier

You bought an air purifier, plugged it in, and placed it wherever it fits. That is what most people do, and it is one of the most common reasons an air purifier underperforms. Placement directly affects how efficiently the unit cycles and cleans the air in your room. This guide covers the principles of correct placement and applies them room by room for a typical Malaysian home.

The three rules of air purifier placement

Regardless of the brand or model, three basic rules apply to every air purifier.

Rule 1: Leave clearance around the unit. Most air purifiers draw air in from the sides or bottom and push clean air out from the top. If the intake is blocked — by a wall, curtain, sofa or cabinet — airflow drops and the motor works harder to pull in less air. Leave at least 30 cm of clearance on all sides of the unit.

For 360-degree intake models like the LG 360 HIT and Alpha Pet Single, this is especially important. These units pull air from every direction, so pushing them into a corner blocks half the intake area.

Rule 2: Place it in the room you use most. If you have one purifier, put it in the room where you spend the most hours. For most Malaysian families, this is the living room during the day and the bedroom at night. Moving the purifier between rooms is practical — LG PuriCare floor-standing models weigh 8-15 kg and have handles or smooth bases for repositioning.

Rule 3: Keep doors and windows closed. An air purifier in a room with an open door is working against a constant inflow of unfiltered air from the rest of the house. Close the door, let the purifier clean the room's air volume, and the sensor will show green within 15-30 minutes.

Room-by-room placement guide

### Living room

The living room is typically the largest room in a Malaysian home (20-50 m2) and the area where the family gathers during the day. Place the purifier in an open area — not behind the sofa, not inside a TV cabinet, and not wedged between the wall and a bookshelf.

Ideal position: near the centre of the longest wall, with at least 30 cm clearance on all sides. If you have an open-plan living and dining area, position the purifier closer to the seating area where people spend the most time.

For living rooms, the LG 360 HIT (61.2 m2, RM50/mo) or AeroBooster (52.8 m2, RM65/mo) are the right capacity. The AeroBooster's slim 240 mm width fits into tight spots without sacrificing intake clearance.

### Bedroom

The bedroom is where placement matters most because you spend 6-8 consecutive hours here. Place the purifier at least 1.5 metres from the head of the bed. Direct airflow on your face while sleeping can dry out your nasal passages and skin — counterproductive if you are using the purifier for allergy management.

Ideal position: on the opposite wall from the bed, or beside the wardrobe. Avoid placing it on the floor directly next to the bed where it might be kicked or blocked by fallen pillows.

The AeroFurniture (19.8 m2, RM60/mo) is designed specifically for bedrooms — its side-table form factor means it replaces a bedside table at a comfortable distance from the bed. The Qi wireless charging pad on top keeps your phone charged overnight.

### Children's room or nursery

Place the purifier at least 1 metre from the cot or bed. Children are lighter sleepers and more sensitive to direct airflow. Position it across the room on a clear section of floor.

Avoid placing it on high furniture in a child's room — a toddler pulling on the unit is a safety risk. Floor-standing models are more stable. Make sure the power cord is secured against the wall and not trailing across the floor.

The 360 HIT (RM50/mo) is the quietest option at 20 dB minimum — it will not disturb a sleeping child.

### Home office

If you work from home in an air-conditioned room for 8 or more hours, you are breathing recirculated air all day. Place the purifier within 2-3 metres of your desk, but not directly beside your monitor where the airflow creates a draught across your workspace.

Ideal position: beside or behind your desk, with the clean air output directed into the room rather than straight at your face.

The AeroBooster at 240 mm wide fits beside a desk without taking floor space. Its Clean Booster directs purified air up to 8.5 metres, covering a standard home office from a corner position.

### Open-plan kitchen and living area

Malaysian open-plan homes present a unique challenge: cooking fumes from the kitchen travel directly into the living area. Place the purifier between the kitchen and the living seating area — it will intercept cooking particles before they settle on your sofa and curtains.

Do not place the purifier next to the stove or hob. Grease, steam and high temperatures near the cooking surface will damage the filter and clog the intake faster. A distance of at least 2 metres from the cooking surface is recommended.

For open-plan layouts, the Alpha Pet Double (104 m2, RM105/mo) has the coverage for the combined space. The 360 HIT (61.2 m2, RM50/mo) works for smaller open-plan areas under 60 m2.

Common placement mistakes

Behind the sofa. This blocks the air intake and creates a dead zone where the purifier recycles the same trapped air.

Inside a cabinet or shelf unit. Some homeowners hide the purifier inside furniture for aesthetics. This blocks intake and exhaust, reducing performance by 50% or more.

On the floor in a corner. Corners restrict airflow from at least two sides. Move the unit at least 50 cm away from any corner.

Next to the aircond indoor unit. Placing the purifier directly below the aircond indoor unit means it is cleaning air that has already been pushed past the aircond's mesh filter — but the aircond's strong airflow can also blow particles past the purifier's intake before they are captured. Offset by at least 1 metre.

On a high shelf. Most floor-standing purifiers are designed to draw air from the lower half of the room (where particles settle) and push clean air upward. Elevating the unit on a shelf reverses this cycle. Keep floor-standing models on the floor.

One purifier or multiple

If your budget allows, placing one purifier in the living room and one in the master bedroom is the most effective setup for a Malaysian home. The living room unit handles daytime cooking fumes and haze infiltration. The bedroom unit runs overnight for clean sleeping air.

If you have one unit, move it to the bedroom at night and back to the living room in the morning. Most LG PuriCare models are light enough to reposition easily.
