Air Purifier Running Cost Malaysia
An air purifier uses about the same electricity as a desk fan. We calculate the real monthly TNB cost for each LG PuriCare model so you can budget accurately — spoiler: it is under RM25 for most units.

One of the most common questions Malaysian buyers ask before subscribing to an air purifier is how much it adds to the electricity bill. The answer is reassuring — most air purifiers draw between 5W and 70W, which puts them in the same category as a desk fan or a phone charger. This post calculates the real monthly TNB cost for each LG PuriCare air purifier so you can budget with confidence.
How we calculated the costs
We used TNB's 2026 residential tariff of 44.43 sen per kWh for consumption above 600 kWh/month, which applies to most Malaysian households running aircond. For lower-usage households (under 600 kWh), the effective rate is lower, so the costs below represent the upper end.
The formula is straightforward: Wattage x Hours per day x 30 days / 1000 x RM0.4443 = Monthly electricity cost.
We calculated two scenarios: running the purifier 12 hours per day (daytime only or bedroom overnight) and 24 hours per day (recommended during haze season).
Monthly electricity cost by LG PuriCare model
| Model | Wattage (low/high) | 12 hrs/day | 24 hrs/day |
|---|---|---|---|
| 360 HIT | 5W / 56W | RM0.80–RM9 | RM1.60–RM18 |
| AeroFurniture | 5W / 40W | RM0.80–RM6.40 | RM1.60–RM12.80 |
| AeroBooster | 5W / 55W | RM0.80–RM8.80 | RM1.60–RM17.60 |
| AeroCatTower | 6W / 42W | RM0.96–RM6.70 | RM1.92–RM13.40 |
| Alpha Pet Single | 6W / 58W | RM0.96–RM9.30 | RM1.92–RM18.50 |
| Alpha Pet Double | 8W / 72W | RM1.28–RM11.50 | RM2.56–RM23 |
The low figure represents the purifier running on its lowest fan speed (sleep mode or auto mode in clean air). The high figure represents running on maximum fan speed continuously, which only happens during heavy haze or when you first turn the unit on in a dusty room.
Realistic monthly cost: RM5-15 for most households
In practice, most LG PuriCare models spend 80-90% of their operating time on low or auto mode. The smart sensor detects current air quality and adjusts the fan speed accordingly. On a normal day with windows closed and aircond running, the sensor reads clean air within 10-20 minutes and drops to the lowest speed.
A realistic monthly electricity cost for most households is RM5-15 — depending on the model and how many hours per day you run it. During haze season, expect the higher end as the sensor ramps up fan speed more frequently.
How this compares to other appliances
To put the cost in perspective, here is what other common household appliances cost to run per month under the same TNB tariff.
| Appliance | Typical wattage | Monthly cost (typical use) |
|---|---|---|
| Air purifier (auto mode) | 5-30W | RM5-15 |
| Desk fan | 35-50W | RM8-15 |
| Ceiling fan | 60-75W | RM12-20 |
| LED TV (65-77 inch) | 80-150W | RM15-30 |
| Air conditioner (1.5HP inverter) | 800-1200W | RM100-160 |
| Air conditioner (1.5HP non-inverter) | 1200-1800W | RM180-250 |
| Refrigerator (inverter) | 30-60W avg | RM30-50 |
An air purifier costs roughly the same as running a desk fan. It is a fraction of what your aircond costs — and running both together gives you cooled air that is also clean.
Air purifier vs aircond: the electricity gap
The most common objection we hear is "I already run aircond, I do not want another appliance adding to my bill." The reality is that an air purifier adds RM5-15 to your monthly TNB bill, while your aircond adds RM100-250. The purifier is a rounding error on your electricity bill.
If you are concerned about overall electricity costs, the highest-impact move is switching from a non-inverter to an inverter aircond. That single change saves RM50-100 per month — enough to cover the air purifier subscription and its electricity cost combined.
Tips to minimise running cost
Use auto mode. Let the smart sensor manage fan speed. Manual high mode wastes electricity when the air is already clean.
Keep the room sealed. Close doors and windows when the purifier is running. An open door forces the purifier to work against a constant inflow of unfiltered air, keeping the fan on higher speeds for longer.
Place the purifier correctly. Do not push it against a wall or block the air intake. Restricted airflow forces the motor to work harder, drawing more power for less effective filtration. Leave at least 30 cm of clearance around the unit.
Replace filters on schedule. A clogged filter increases motor load. On LG Subscribe, filter replacements are included in your monthly plan. If you bought outright, follow the recommended schedule.
Run it 24/7 on auto during haze. This sounds counterintuitive for saving electricity, but auto mode at low speed overnight draws only 5-8W — less than a nightlight. Turning the purifier off overnight and restarting in the morning forces it to run on high for 20-30 minutes to clear accumulated particles, which uses more total energy.
The total cost of clean air
Let us put the full picture together for the most popular model, the 360 HIT at RM50/month.
| Cost item | Monthly |
|---|---|
| LG Subscribe plan | RM50 |
| Estimated electricity (auto, 24/7) | ~RM8 |
| Filter replacements | Included |
| Maintenance | Included |
| **Total** | **~RM58/month** |
For RM58/month — less than a moderate restaurant meal for two — you get H13 HEPA filtration covering 61.2 m2, scheduled filter changes, full warranty, and air quality you can verify on your phone through the LG ThinQ app.
