Dehumidifier Guide for Malaysian Homes: Mould, Monsoon and Musty Wardrobes
Malaysia averages 75-85% relative humidity year-round. That is bad news for wardrobes, walls, electronics and anyone with asthma. A dehumidifier is the quiet fix — here is how to choose, size and run one.

Malaysian air sits between 75% and 85% relative humidity for most of the year. During the monsoon — November through January on the east coast, March through May elsewhere — it crosses 90% for weeks at a time. That humidity is the reason your wardrobe smells musty, your walls grow black spots, your camera lenses fog, and your wooden furniture warps over time.
A dehumidifier solves it. This guide explains when one earns its keep, how to size it to your home, and what an LG PuriCare 16L Dual Inverter actually costs to run.
The humidity problem in numbers
For human comfort, indoor humidity should sit between 40% and 60%. For preventing mould growth, the upper limit is 60%. For protecting electronics, leather goods, cameras and musical instruments, the safe zone is 45–55%.
Malaysian indoor humidity, even with aircond running, typically measures 65–75%. Aircond does dehumidify — it removes moisture as a byproduct of cooling — but only when running. Once it switches off, indoor humidity climbs within 2 hours.
A dedicated dehumidifier runs independently of cooling. It treats humidity directly instead of as a side effect.
Signs you need one
Two or more of those signs means humidity is already causing damage. A dehumidifier pays back faster than you would expect.
Sizing: how much water capacity do you need
Dehumidifier capacity is measured in litres of water extracted per day. The right size depends on home area and how leaky it is to outdoor air.
| Home size | Recommended capacity |
|---|---|
| Single bedroom (~150 sq ft) | 8–10 L/day |
| Studio or 2-bedroom condo (~500–800 sq ft) | 12–16 L/day |
| Landed double-storey (~1,800–2,500 sq ft) | 1 per floor, 16–20 L/day each |
| Whole-home single-storey (~1,200 sq ft) | One 16–20 L/day unit if rooms connect |
The LG PuriCare 16L DUAL Inverter sits in the middle of that range and is the right size for most condo and average landed living areas.
Dual Inverter vs single-speed
A single-speed dehumidifier runs the compressor at one fixed speed — on full, or off. A Dual Inverter unit varies compressor speed continuously, the same way an inverter aircond does. Two practical effects:
1. Lower electricity cost. Once humidity is at target, the compressor slows to maintain instead of cycling on and off. Around 30–40% less energy on equivalent runtime.
2. Quieter operation. Single-speed units cycle at 45 dB. Inverter units running at maintenance speed sit at 30–35 dB — quiet enough for a bedroom.
What it costs to run
Under TNB's 2026 residential tariff at 44.43 sen/kWh, an LG PuriCare 16L DUAL Inverter running 6 hours per day uses about 1.6 kWh — roughly RM0.71 per day, or RM21–25 per month.
If you run it 24 hours during peak monsoon weeks, monthly cost rises to RM85–100 for that month, then settles back as the season eases.
Placement matters
A dehumidifier works on the air it touches. For best results:
Maintenance
The PuriCare 16L unit needs three maintenance tasks:
1. Empty the water tank — every 1–2 days during humid weeks. Or connect the continuous drain hose to a floor drain and forget it.
2. Clean the dust filter — vacuum every 2 weeks, wash monthly.
3. Wipe the coil cover — once a quarter.
That is the entire upkeep. No filter replacements needed for the dehumidification function itself.

Why subscription fits this category
Dehumidifiers run year-round and the compressor is the part that wears out. Subscription bundles servicing and replacement during the contract. If the unit develops a fault or compressor issue, it gets serviced or swapped at no extra cost. Buying outright means you eat the repair bill or replace it.
For a category most Malaysian homes have not tried, the subscription removes the "what if it doesn't help" risk.
