LG PuriCare vs Coway Water Purifier Malaysia: Tankless, Filters and TCO
Coway built the Malaysian water purifier market. LG PuriCare is the most credible challenger. We compare them on the criteria that actually matter — tankless vs tank, filter system, hot/cold water output, total cost over 5 years, and after-sales.

Coway has been the default Malaysian water purifier for over a decade. The rental-and-service model is what taught Malaysian households to subscribe to home appliances at all. LG PuriCare is the credible challenger — same subscription approach, different engineering.
This is the honest comparison most buyers want before committing to a 3-year contract with either brand.
Tankless vs tank-based design
This is the most important engineering difference.
LG PuriCare ATOM-U and the broader PuriCare tankless range use direct-flow filtration with no internal water tank. Water is filtered on demand as you dispense. No water sits inside the machine between uses.
Coway purifiers use a small internal tank to pre-store hot and cold water, ready to dispense instantly.
The case for tankless:
The case for tank-based:
For most Malaysian households (2–4 people, moderate water usage), tankless wins on hygiene and footprint. For large families and frequent hosting, tank-based has a slight throughput advantage.
UV sterilisation
LG UVnano technology sterilises the dispensing nozzle every 1, 6, 12 or 24 hours (user-selectable). The nozzle is the most common contamination point — kids touch it, splash gets on it, biofilm grows. UVnano kills 99.99% of bacteria on the nozzle on its scheduled cycle.
Coway purifiers offer UV sterilisation on premium models, typically targeting the internal tank or the dispensing path. Coverage varies by model — read the spec sheet for the specific unit.
LG's UVnano implementation is more consistent across the PuriCare range. Coway's UV is feature-flagged on higher-tier units.
Filter system and replacement schedule
Both brands use multi-stage filtration with sediment, carbon and reverse osmosis or nanofiltration components depending on model.
LG PuriCare:
Coway:
Filter performance — particle filtration, chlorine removal, heavy metal reduction — is broadly equivalent at matched stage counts. Both brands meet NSF International standards for drinking water purifier output.
Hot, cold, ambient water output
Both brands offer hot, cold and ambient water dispensing on premium models.
| Function | LG PuriCare ATOM-U | Coway premium tank model |
|---|---|---|
| Cold water temperature | 4–8°C | 4–8°C |
| Hot water temperature | 60–85°C user-selectable | 85–90°C |
| Hot water response time | Tankless, ~3 sec | Pre-tank, instant |
| Cold water flow rate | Throttles after 1.5L | Tank-fed, faster |
For tea and coffee makers, Coway's slightly higher hot-water temperature is a minor advantage. For instant noodles and beverages, both are sufficient.
Subscription pricing structure
Both brands use a subscription rental model. Pricing varies by specific unit and promotional period, but the structure is similar:
Direct purchase option:
For most buyers, the subscription model is the default for both brands.
Service network and visit frequency
Both brands send technicians every 1–4 months for filter inspection, replacement and cleaning.
Coway has the deeper service network in Malaysia — the brand has been here longest, with the largest field service team and the widest geographic coverage.
LG service for PuriCare is integrated with LG's broader home appliance service network. Coverage is strong in major cities, adequate in smaller cities, varies in East Malaysia.
For peninsular Malaysian cities, both are reliable. For East Malaysia and smaller towns, Coway has the more established service presence.
Visual design
LG's PuriCare ATOM-U is built for under-counter installation — the only visible component is a slim dispensing tap on the counter. The bulk of the machine sits hidden inside a cabinet.
Coway purifiers are typically countertop units — the full machine sits on the worktop. Some Coway models offer under-counter installation but it is not the default configuration.
For Malaysian kitchens being designed around clean lines and minimal countertop clutter, the LG PuriCare ATOM-U under-counter design is the clear advantage.
For kitchens where countertop appliances are standard, the visible Coway unit is not a problem.
Health and water-related claims
Both brands market additional features (alkaline mineralisation, antioxidant water, etc.) on specific models. These are mostly marketing — the underlying filtered water is safe and clean from either brand, with mineral content adjusted at the post-filter stage.
For Malaysian drinking water (typically chloraminated, with occasional sediment events from old building piping), the core filtration of both brands does the actual job. The "added features" tier rarely changes daily water quality in a meaningful way.
Which one to pick
The brands are 80% equivalent in water quality output. The 20% that decides is form factor (countertop vs under-counter), service network depth in your area, and your stance on tankless vs tank-based design.
For a Malaysian urban condo dweller redesigning a clean-line kitchen, the LG PuriCare ATOM-U is the more modern answer. For an established family in a smaller city with multi-generational water demand, Coway's depth often wins.
