Subscribe to an Aircond in Malaysia
Subscription, outright purchase and hire-purchase are three ways to get an aircond in Malaysia. We compare the real costs, warranty terms, maintenance and flexibility of each so you can choose the right path.

Getting a new aircond in Malaysia used to mean one decision: which brand and HP. Now there is a second decision — how you pay for it. You can buy outright, finance through hire-purchase, or subscribe through a service like LG Subscribe. Each option has different implications for your cash flow, warranty coverage, maintenance and flexibility. This post compares all three so you can choose the option that fits your financial situation.
The three options at a glance
| Factor | Buy outright | Hire-purchase | LG Subscribe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Full price (RM2,000-5,000+) | Deposit (10-20%) | RM0 |
| Monthly payment | None | Fixed instalment | Fixed subscription |
| Interest | None | 3-8% p.a. | None (flat rate) |
| Warranty | 1-2 years (standard) | 1-2 years (standard) | Full term (60 months) |
| Installation | Separate cost (RM200-600) | Sometimes included | Included |
| Maintenance | On you | On you | Included (annual service) |
| Ownership | Immediate | After full payment | After term ends |
| Flexibility to upgrade | Sell old unit yourself | Pay off remaining, then sell | Upgrade at end of term |
Option 1: Buy outright
Buying outright means paying the full retail price in one transaction. For a 1.5HP inverter aircond, this is typically RM2,000-3,500 depending on the brand. Installation is quoted separately — expect RM250-500 for standard installation (indoor unit, outdoor unit, piping up to 10 ft).
The advantage is clear: no monthly commitment, no interest, and the unit is yours immediately. If you have cash available and plan to keep the aircond for 8-10 years, this is the cheapest option in total ringgit spent.
The disadvantages: your cash is tied up in a depreciating asset, the manufacturer warranty is typically 1-2 years for the unit (compressor warranty may be longer), and all maintenance and repairs after the warranty period are out of pocket. A typical chemical wash costs RM80-150 per unit per year. A compressor replacement (rare but expensive) runs RM800-1,500.
Option 2: Hire-purchase or credit card instalment
Hire-purchase spreads the cost over 12-36 months through a financing arrangement — either directly through the retailer, a bank, or 0% credit card instalments.
The monthly payment depends on the total price and the financing term. A RM3,000 aircond on 24-month 0% instalment is RM125/month. With interest-bearing hire-purchase at 5% p.a., the same unit costs approximately RM131/month over 24 months (total: RM3,150).
The advantage over outright purchase: you keep your cash. The disadvantage compared to subscription: you still pay for installation separately, the warranty is still 1-2 years (standard), and maintenance is your responsibility after the warranty expires. Credit card instalments also tie up your credit limit for the full instalment period.
Option 3: LG Subscribe
LG Subscribe is a monthly subscription that bundles the aircond, delivery, installation, warranty and annual maintenance into one fixed payment for 60 months.
| Model | Monthly | Term | Included |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.0HP DUAL Inverter | RM80/mo | 60 mo | Unit + install + 10-year compressor warranty + annual service |
| 1.5HP DUAL Inverter | RM90/mo | 60 mo | Same |
| ARTCOOL 1.5HP | RM100/mo | 60 mo | Same |
| 2.0HP DUAL Inverter | RM110/mo | 60 mo | Same |
| 2.5HP DUAL Inverter | RM120/mo | 60 mo | Same |
| ARTCOOL 2.5HP | RM130/mo | 60 mo | Same |

There is no deposit, no upfront cost, and no interest. The monthly rate is fixed for the full 60 months. Installation of both indoor and outdoor units is included. Annual servicing (chemical wash, gas check, performance inspection) is included. The 10-year compressor warranty covers the most expensive component of the aircond for the full expected lifespan.
At the end of the 60-month term, the unit is yours. You can continue using it, upgrade to a newer model, or return it.
Real cost comparison: 1.5HP aircond over 5 years
Let us compare the three options for a 1.5HP inverter aircond over 5 years — the typical minimum lifespan before most families consider replacing.
| Cost item | Buy outright | Hire-purchase (24 mo, 0%) | LG Subscribe (60 mo) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unit price | RM3,000 | RM3,000 | Included |
| Installation | RM350 | RM350 | Included |
| Annual service x 5 | RM500-750 | RM500-750 | Included |
| Repairs (years 3-5) | RM0-500 (variable) | RM0-500 (variable) | Included |
| Interest | RM0 | RM0 (0% promo) | RM0 |
| **5-year total** | **RM3,850-4,600** | **RM3,850-4,600** | **RM5,400** |
On raw ringgit, buying outright or hire-purchase is cheaper by RM800-1,550 over 5 years. But the subscription total includes every service visit, every repair, and a 10-year compressor warranty — costs that are variable and unpredictable under the other two options.
The real question is not which costs less in total, but which fits your cash flow and risk preference.
When subscribe makes more sense than buying
You are furnishing a new home. If you need aircond for 3 bedrooms and a living room, that is RM12,000-15,000 outright plus RM1,000-2,000 for installation. On LG Subscribe, the same 4-unit setup is RM350-400/month with zero upfront. Your renovation budget stays intact.
You want zero maintenance admin. LG proactively schedules annual servicing. You do not need to find a contractor, negotiate pricing, or remember when the last chemical wash was done. For busy professionals and families, this convenience has real value.
You want full-term warranty protection. A compressor failure in year 3 or 4 on an outright-purchased unit can cost RM800-1,500 out of pocket. On LG Subscribe, it is covered. The 10-year compressor warranty eliminates the most expensive possible repair.
You plan to upgrade in 5 years. If you want the latest energy-efficient model every 5 years rather than running the same unit for a decade, subscription gives you a clean upgrade path. No selling old units, no negotiating trade-in value.
When buying outright makes more sense
You have cash and no competing priorities. If RM3,000-5,000 does not strain your finances and you plan to keep the aircond for 8-10 years, outright purchase is cheaper in total.
You only need one unit. A single aircond is a manageable one-time expense. Subscription is most valuable when you need multiple units simultaneously.
You are comfortable managing your own maintenance. If you already have a trusted aircond contractor and you service on schedule, the maintenance inclusion in the subscription plan has less value for you.
The flexibility factor
One advantage of subscription that is easy to overlook: flexibility. If you move house during the term, LG Subscribe can arrange relocation of the unit. If your circumstances change and you need to end the plan early, early settlement is an option. If the unit develops a fault, LG repairs or replaces it — you do not need to diagnose, source parts, or negotiate with a contractor.
Buying outright gives you ownership but ties you to the unit. Hire-purchase gives you financing but ties you to the debt. Subscription gives you the appliance, the maintenance and the warranty — with a clear end date and a clean upgrade path.
