TNB Tariff 2026: What It Means for You

TNB's 2026 tariff means higher electricity rates for some households. Here is how it affects your home appliances — and what you can do about it without sacrificing comfort.

TNB Tariff 2026: What It Means for You

TNB's 2026 residential electricity tariff affects every Malaysian household running aircond, a fridge and other daily appliances. This post breaks down the new rates, shows which appliances consume the most electricity, and explains practical steps to reduce your monthly bill without sacrificing comfort.

What changed in 2026

TNB's residential tariff for 2026 applies a rate of 44.43 sen per kWh for households consuming above 600 kWh per month. For most Malaysian families running aircond, a fridge, a washer and other appliances daily, monthly consumption easily exceeds 600 kWh.

The practical impact: your monthly TNB bill may be RM30 to RM100 higher than it was under the previous tariff structure, depending on your usage pattern.

Which appliances consume the most electricity?

Understanding where your electricity goes is the first step to managing costs.

ApplianceTypical daily useEstimated monthly cost (2026)
Air conditioner (1.5HP non-inverter)8 hoursRM180–250
Air conditioner (1.5HP inverter)8 hoursRM100–160
Refrigerator (conventional)24 hoursRM50–80
Refrigerator (inverter)24 hoursRM30–50
Washing machine1 load/dayRM15–25
Water purifier24 hours standbyRM5–15
TV (65–77 inch)5 hoursRM15–30

The aircond is by far the biggest consumer, followed by the refrigerator. These two appliances together can account for 60 to 70% of your household electricity bill.

How to reduce your bill without reducing comfort

Switch to inverter aircond. This is the single biggest impact you can make. An LG DUAL Inverter aircond uses 30–50% less electricity than a non-inverter unit. At the 2026 tariff rate, switching a 1.5HP unit saves RM50–100 per month — the inverter pays for itself within 18 months.

Upgrade your fridge. If your fridge is more than 8 years old, it is likely a conventional compressor model drawing 50–80% more electricity than a modern inverter fridge. The LG 493L Inverter fridge starts at RM80/month with a 10-year compressor warranty.

Set your aircond to 24–26°C. Every 1°C lower than 24°C increases energy use by roughly 5–10%. Running at 22°C instead of 24°C adds approximately RM15–30 to your monthly bill per unit.

Service your aircond regularly. A dirty filter and clogged coils force the compressor to work 15–25% harder. Annual servicing — included free on all LG Subscribe aircond plans — keeps your unit running at peak efficiency.

Use a heat pump dryer instead of a vented dryer. Heat pump technology uses up to 50% less energy. The LG 9kg Heat Pump Dryer at RM100/month is ventless and designed for indoor Malaysian laundry areas.

The subscription advantage

On LG Subscribe, every appliance comes with scheduled maintenance that keeps it running efficiently for the full term. A well-maintained inverter aircond does not just cool better — it draws less power month after month. That maintenance is included in your subscription, not an extra cost.
