Air Purifier for Asthma and Allergies
Dust mites, haze and pet dander trigger asthma and allergies in millions of Malaysians. Here is what the science says about HEPA air purifiers — and which models carry independent allergy certification.

Asthma and allergic rhinitis affect a significant portion of the Malaysian population. The National Health and Morbidity Survey estimates that around 10-15% of Malaysian adults and up to 20% of children experience some form of allergic respiratory condition. In a tropical climate where dust mites thrive, haze season recurs annually, and indoor air recirculates through aircond systems for hours each day, managing indoor air quality is not optional — it is part of the treatment plan.
This post covers the science behind how HEPA air purifiers reduce asthma and allergy triggers, what to look for in a purifier, and which LG models carry independent allergy certification.
Common indoor allergy triggers in Malaysia
Understanding what triggers your symptoms is the first step to managing them. In Malaysian homes, four airborne allergens dominate.
Dust mite allergens. Malaysia's warm, humid climate (25-35 degrees Celsius, 70-90% relative humidity) is ideal for dust mite populations. The allergen is not the mite itself but its faecal pellets — tiny particles of 10-40 microns that become airborne when bedding, cushions or carpets are disturbed. These particles are the number one indoor allergy trigger in Southeast Asia.
Haze particulates (PM2.5). During haze season (typically June to October), fine particulate matter from agricultural burning infiltrates indoor spaces even with windows closed. PM2.5 particles inflame airways, trigger bronchospasm in asthma sufferers, and worsen nasal congestion in allergic rhinitis patients.
Pet dander. Microscopic flakes of skin shed by cats and dogs. Cat dander is particularly problematic because the particles are smaller (1-5 microns) and remain airborne for hours. Even in homes without pets, cat dander is often present on visitors' clothing.
Mould spores. High humidity in Malaysian bathrooms, kitchens and poorly ventilated rooms encourages mould growth. Mould spores (2-20 microns) trigger both allergic reactions and, in severe cases, hypersensitivity pneumonitis.
How HEPA filtration helps
A HEPA air purifier works by forcing air through a dense mat of randomly arranged fibres. Particles are captured through three mechanisms: interception (medium particles follow the airstream and touch a fibre), impaction (large particles cannot follow the airstream curve and collide with fibres), and diffusion (the smallest particles move erratically and stick to fibres).
H13-grade HEPA filters capture 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns — the most penetrating particle size. This means they are effective against all four major Malaysian indoor allergens.
| Allergen | Particle size | Captured by H13 HEPA |
|---|---|---|
| Dust mite faecal pellets | 10-40 microns | Yes (with high efficiency) |
| Haze PM2.5 | 0.1-2.5 microns | Yes |
| Cat dander | 1-5 microns | Yes |
| Dog dander | 5-10 microns | Yes |
| Mould spores | 2-20 microns | Yes |
| Pollen | 10-100 microns | Yes (with high efficiency) |
What the research says
Multiple peer-reviewed studies have shown that HEPA air purifiers reduce airborne allergen concentrations and improve symptoms in asthma and allergy patients.
A 2020 systematic review published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology found that portable HEPA air purifiers reduced indoor PM2.5 concentrations by 25-50% and improved peak expiratory flow rates in asthmatic children. The effect was strongest when the purifier was placed in the bedroom and run continuously overnight.
A separate study in Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology found that HEPA filtration combined with mattress encasings reduced dust mite allergen levels in bedrooms by 60-80% over a 12-month period.
The evidence is consistent: HEPA filtration is not a cure for asthma or allergies, but it meaningfully reduces the allergen burden that triggers symptoms.
What to look for in a purifier for asthma and allergies
H13 HEPA minimum. Lower-grade filters (E12, HEPA-type) let through too many fine particles. For allergy management, H13 is the practical minimum. See our HEPA filter guide for a detailed breakdown of filter grades.
Independent allergy certification. Look for BAF (British Allergy Foundation) or Allergy UK certification. These require independent lab testing to verify that the purifier reduces airborne allergens — not just particles in general. Marketing claims like "anti-allergen" without certification are unverifiable.
Adequate room coverage. An undersized purifier will not cycle the air frequently enough to maintain low allergen levels. Match the CADR and coverage rating to your room size. For bedrooms (10-20 m2), even the entry-level models are sufficient. For living rooms (30-60 m2), choose a unit rated for the full area.
Activated carbon layer. While HEPA captures particles, activated carbon adsorbs gases and VOCs. This is relevant for allergy sufferers who also react to chemical irritants from cleaning products, new furniture or cooking fumes.
Low noise. If the purifier is running in a bedroom overnight (which it should be for allergy management), noise matters. Models under 25 dB on sleep mode will not disturb your rest.
LG models with allergy credentials

The LG PuriCare AeroBooster is the standout choice for allergy sufferers. It is BAF (British Allergy Foundation) certified, uses dual H13 HEPA filters, and includes UVnano sterilisation that eliminates bacteria on the fan blades. At 21 dB minimum noise and 52.8 m2 coverage, it is quiet enough for a bedroom and powerful enough for a living room. The subscription starts at RM65/month.
The 360 HIT at RM50/month is a strong alternative if budget is the priority. It covers 61.2 m2 with H13 HEPA and runs at 20 dB minimum — the quietest in the LG range. It does not carry BAF certification but uses the same H13 filter grade.
For pet allergy sufferers, the Alpha Pet Single at RM75/month uses the V-Pet H13 filter optimised for dander and fur, covering 61.2 m2. The Alpha Pet Double at RM105/month extends coverage to 104 m2 and adds Baby Care mode for households with both pets and young children.
Placement tips for allergy management
Bedroom is the priority. You spend 6-8 hours in the bedroom with the door closed. Place the purifier in this room first. If you can only afford one unit, this is where it goes.
Keep the door closed. A sealed room with a running purifier creates a clean-air zone. Open the door only briefly when entering or leaving. The purifier will recover air quality within minutes.
Run it continuously on auto mode. Allergens are generated and released constantly — by bedding movement, foot traffic, pet activity, and outdoor infiltration. Running the purifier only when symptoms flare means allergens have already accumulated to triggering levels.
Position it away from walls. Leave at least 30 cm clearance around the unit for unobstructed airflow. Pushing it against a wall reduces circulation efficiency.
Combine with other measures. An air purifier reduces airborne allergens but does not eliminate them from surfaces. Combine HEPA filtration with dust mite-proof mattress covers, weekly hot-water bedding washes (above 60 degrees Celsius), and regular vacuuming with a HEPA-equipped vacuum.
A note on medical advice
Air purifiers are a useful environmental control measure, but they are not a substitute for medical treatment. If you have asthma or severe allergies, follow your doctor's prescribed medication plan. An air purifier complements your treatment by reducing the triggers that cause flare-ups — it does not replace inhalers, antihistamines or immunotherapy.
