Why Your Office Needs an Air Purifier

Office workers in Malaysia spend 8 or more hours in air-conditioned spaces with recycled air. Here is how to choose the right air purifier for a home office, a meeting room, or a shared commercial space.

Why Your Office Needs an Air Purifier

If you work in an office in Malaysia — whether a home office, a co-working space, or a commercial building — you are breathing recirculated air-conditioned air for 8 or more hours every day. Most office aircond systems use basic mesh filters that catch dust and lint but let fine particles, VOCs and allergens pass through freely. Adding a dedicated air purifier to your workspace improves the air you breathe during the longest continuous exposure window of your day.

This guide covers why office air quality matters, how to choose the right purifier for different office spaces, and which LG PuriCare models fit each use case.

Why office air quality is often worse than you think

Office environments have specific air quality challenges that differ from residential spaces.

High occupancy density. More people in a confined space means more CO2, more bioaerosols (respiratory droplets, skin cells), and more airborne bacteria. A meeting room with 8 people and the door closed for an hour can see CO2 levels rise above 1,000 ppm — the threshold where concentration and cognitive performance measurably decline.

Centralised HVAC without HEPA. Most Malaysian office buildings use centralised air handling units with G4 or F7 pre-filters. These are designed to protect the HVAC equipment, not to purify the air for occupants. Fine particles, mould spores and allergens recirculate through the ductwork.

Off-gassing from furniture and materials. Office carpets, particleboard desks, synthetic chairs and printers release formaldehyde and other VOCs continuously. New office fit-outs are particularly heavy with off-gassing in the first 6-12 months.

Pantry and food odours. In Malaysian offices, the pantry is rarely separated by a sealed door. Microwaved curry, nasi lemak steam and coffee machine fumes travel through the open-plan space.

Air purifier recommendations by office type

### Home office (10-20 m2)

A home office is typically a spare bedroom or a partitioned area in the living room. You are the only occupant, and the main concerns are recirculated aircond air, dust, and allergens.

The LG PuriCare AeroBooster is purpose-built for this space. At 240 mm wide, it fits beside a desk without taking up floor space. The dual H13 HEPA filters and BAF allergy certification handle dust, pollen and haze particles. Clean Booster pushes purified air up to 8.5 metres across the room.

At RM65/month on LG Subscribe, the AeroBooster covers 52.8 m2 — more than enough for any home office. Run it on auto mode during working hours and it will maintain clean air levels without you thinking about it.

Alternatively, the AeroFurniture at RM60/month doubles as a side table with Qi wireless charging. If your home office setup needs a surface for your phone or a cup of coffee beside the desk, this model saves furniture and serves dual duty.

### Meeting room (15-30 m2)

Meeting rooms are the worst indoor air quality hotspots in any office. Multiple people, closed doors, limited ventilation, and sessions that run an hour or more. CO2 and bioaerosol levels climb rapidly.

The LG 360 HIT at RM50/month covers 61.2 m2 with 360-degree air intake — it can be placed in a corner or against a wall and still draw air from every direction. At 20 dB on low speed, it will not interfere with discussions. The Clean Booster circulates purified air across the full room.

For larger meeting rooms or boardrooms (30-60 m2), the Alpha Pet Single at RM75/month provides 61.2 m2 coverage with stronger CADR. The "Pet" designation refers to the enhanced filter — the unit works identically for office use.

### Open-plan office (50-100 m2)

Large open-plan offices need higher CADR and wider coverage. A single purifier in the corner will not cycle the air effectively across a 100 m2 space.

Two practical approaches:

Option 1: One large unit. The Alpha Pet Double at RM105/month covers 104 m2 with dual H13 HEPA filters and the highest CADR in the LG range. Place it centrally in the open-plan area.

Option 2: Multiple smaller units. Place two or three 360 HIT units at RM50/month each in different zones of the open-plan area. This provides better air distribution and covers more dead zones than a single central unit. Total cost: RM100-150/month for comprehensive coverage.

Multiple smaller units is often the better approach for rectangular open-plan offices where a single unit cannot reach both ends effectively.

### Office pantry

The pantry is a persistent odour source in Malaysian offices. Microwaved food, coffee machines and the bin produce a steady stream of cooking fumes and organic gases.

A compact purifier with strong deodorising capability works here. The 360 HIT at RM50/month has a three-stage deodorising filter designed for cooking and food odours — the same recommendation we make for open-plan kitchens in homes.

Place it at least 2 metres from the microwave and sink to avoid steam and splatter damage. Run it on auto mode throughout office hours.

The business case for office air purifiers

For business owners considering the investment, the numbers are straightforward. A 360 HIT at RM50/month costs RM600/year including filters and maintenance. The estimated productivity loss from poor indoor air quality — based on studies by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health — is 6-9% in cognitive function test scores when CO2 and particulate levels are elevated.

For an office of 10 employees, even a 1% improvement in productivity from cleaner air is worth more than RM600/year. The purifier also reduces sick days — airborne virus transmission drops when HEPA filtration removes respiratory droplets from the shared air.

During haze season, the business case becomes even clearer. Employees with asthma or allergies who might otherwise take sick leave can continue working comfortably in a HEPA-filtered office.

LG Subscribe for businesses

LG Subscribe plans work the same way for businesses as for households. Monthly subscription, no upfront cost, filters and maintenance included. For offices that need multiple units, our consultants can put together a package with coordinated delivery and installation.

All LG PuriCare models are available on 84-month plans. For businesses that prefer a shorter commitment, 60-month plans are available on most models at a slightly higher monthly rate.
